Who is buried in Jannat ul Mualla?

Many historical personalities who helped Islam grow and died before the Hijrah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to Madina are buried in Jannat ul Mualla. Some famous graves are;

1- Khadija bint Khuwaylid رضي الله عنها, the first wife of Prophet Muhammad and the first Muslim of Islam.

2- Qasim Ibn Muhammad was the eldest son of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was buried in Jannat al Mualla.

3- Abdullah ibn Muhammad رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ, the second son of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

4- Abu Tufail ‘Amr ibn Wathila al-Leethi رضي الله عنه was the last Sahabi who died.

5- Asma bint Abu Bakr رضي الله عنها, the daughter of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه.

6- Abdullah bin Zubair رضي الله عنه, the grandson of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه.

Many people wrongly believe that the mother of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Aminah, is also buried in Jannat ul Mualla, but this is not true. She died on her way from Madina to Makkah when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was 7 years old, and her grave is also there. 

Can anyone be buried in Jannat ul Mualla?

Mualla Cemetery is not open to everyone. You cannot use influences to get buried here. The following two types of people are buried in Jannat ul Mualla.

  • One who dies in Makkah.
  • One who dies wearing Ihram in any part of Saudi Arabia.

If he dies anywhere else in Saudi Arabia, no matter who he is, he will not be buried in the Mualla Cemetery.

Jannat Al Mu’alla, also known as Al Hajun, is a cemetery located 1km north of Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. A long white wall surrounds it, and there is no restriction to entry. The cemetery is open all year round.

Demolition of Jannat ul-Mualla

The tombs and graves in Jannat ul Mualla built over history, especially during the Ottoman Empire, were demolished in 1926 for religious reasons. In Islam, there is no concept of decorating a grave, and therefore, the Saudi government took the required action.
