Who was Ka’b bin Ashraf?
Ka’b bin Ashraf was a wealthy Jewish poet who used his poetic talent to instigate hatred into the hearts of the people against Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
He used to compose and recite depreciative verses against Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the Sahaba رضي الله عنهم, and the Muslim women. His verses praised the enemies of Islam and motivated them to go against Islam.
He traveled to Makkah to instigate hatred
To further spread the hatred among the Non-Muslims against the Muslims, Ka’b bin Ashraf traveled to Makkah. Here he started to continue his mission which had a bigger impact because the Quraysh loathed the Muslims even more after the Battle of Badr.
His verses triggered a fire in the hearts of the people of Makkah who were motivated even more now against the Muslims.
Which religion is better?
On Ka’b bin Ashraf was asked by Abu Sufiyan which religion he would prefer more, the religion of the Makkans or the religion of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He replied that the Makkans were better guided.
He started defaming Muslim women
He came back to Madina and went below the belt by writing poems with the started propaganda of defaming the pure Muslim women of Madina.
The order to Kill
The Muslims had tolerated him for a long time but now they had had enough. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gathered the Muslims and asked them who would volunteer to kill Ka’b bin Ashraf. 5 men volunteered among whom his foster brother was also present.
Muhammad bin Muslimah رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ asked Prophet Muhammad ﷺ the permission to deal with the situation in their own way. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ allowed and deputed them to execute the task.
He was tricked by Muslims
Muhammad bin Muslimah رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ and his companions went to meet Ka’b bin Ashraf and told him Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had brought trouble to the people of Madinah.
He could not see that these people might be tricking him. All he could feel was a delight at the sight of the people who hate Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He, therefore, trusted the Muslim companions and let them enter his fort.
He was killed inside his fort
Ka’b bin Ashraf was present in his fortress when the five Muslims called upon him. His wife asked him to take care of himself, but he was so overwhelmed to be dealing with the haters of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that he did not care about anything else.
He set out with them on a walk within his fort. In a safe place, one of the men held his head while the other struck his ax on his abdomen. He screamed horribly with pain and died on the spot.
Jews approached Prophet Muhammad
Ka’b bin Ashraf’s men took the matter to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ saying that the Muslims had killed him with deceit.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ replied that he had wronged the Muslims for long enough with his evil ways and had done enough propaganda against Islam. To this, the Jews remained silent.
