Why will The Hell be filled by a majority of women? Prophet Muhammad explained

I was actually very confused when people told me that it is a fact that the hell would be filled majorly by women. This was something very strange for me. At first, I thought it was a general misconception that has been spread around by men. Then in my subconscious, I believed it to be true as women outnumber men in the population.[irp]

But this wasn’t enough for me. I wanted to hunch down. If it is false then the world should know and if it is true and it has been revealed that hell would be majorly filled by women, and then the reason must have been told as well.  So, first I dug up the source of the statement.

I found out a hadith that actually claims that hell would be populated by a majority of women. The hadith has been quoted in Sahih al-Bukhari 29.

The prophet PBUH once revealed the fact that he PBUH has seen the Hell. The hell was majorly filled by women, women who had been ungrateful. This shocked the people around and the asked the Prophet PBUH that what was the reason behind it? Are they ungrateful towards Allah Almighty or are they disbelievers?

On this, the Prophet PBUH said that the women would majorly dwell in hell as they are ungrateful towards their husbands. They are ungrateful towards the favors their husbands bestow on them and they are ungrateful for their husband’s good deeds that he does in their favor.

He PBUH further added that if a husband always remains kind and good with his wife and if she sees something in her husband that she does not like, she will certainly say that he had never been good with her. She would be ungrateful for the good she had been receiving from her husband.

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “I was shown the Hell-fire and that the majority of its dwellers were women who were ungrateful.” It was asked, “Do they disbelieve in Allah?” (or are they ungrateful to Allah?) He replied, “They are ungrateful to their husbands and are ungrateful for the favors and the good (charitable deeds) done to them. If you have always been good (benevolent) to one of them and then she sees something in you (not of her liking), she will say, ‘I have never received any good from you.” – Sahih al-Bukhari 29

Yes, it is a fact that women will be in majority in hell. Their crime has also been stated. Being ungrateful to your husband is indeed a bad thing. A husband does a lot for his wife and if a husband is kind and loving, a wife should be grateful for it. This is something that every woman shall go through and learn from it.

So ladies out there, be grateful to your husband. If your husband is good for you, be good with him. Being grateful for him will not only make you happy, but you would lead a happily married life. It would also help you to raise up your children in the best way and of course, you won’t face punishment in the hereafter.
