The first lady of Pakistan: It is to be noted that Bushra Maneka is the third wife of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan. He has been divorced from Jamima Khan and Rehan Khan, her 2 ex-wives.
Basically, the attire worn by the first lady is not a traditional dress of Pakistan. To our surprise, this white attire or niqab is known as Al Hayek in North African countries and it is a traditional dress for women in Algeria.
In many countries including Pakistan, the niqab is worn in black color and when it comes to white color it becomes similar to the one that was worn by the Algerian women.
Why are Algerian women happy? It was the first traditional dress of Algerian women since the fall of Al-Andalus. However, at the end of ’80s and at the beginning of the 90s the headscarf was replaced with Al Hayek and this long traditional body attire started disappearing as a whole.
Al Hayek is basically an off-white full-body covering usually made of wool or silk and sometimes a piece of cloth or veil is added at the front to cover the face leaving the eyes uncovered.
It was usually worn by the Algerian women as an outer covering over the clothes while leaving their home just like abaya.
Bushra Bibi got famous in Algeria: Now Algerian women use to wear a headscarf or Hijab to cover themselves for religious and societal reasons while leaving their home and this attire has vanished completely.
