First murder in the World – Qabil killed Habil

The first murder in the world/earth was committed by the sons of Prophet Adam عليه السلام where the elder son Qabil killed his younger brother Habil.

  • Qabil biblical name: Cain.
  • Habil biblical name: Abel.

Prophet Adam Sons

Prophet Adam عليه السلام had many sons and daughters out of which three are quite famous.

  • Qabil was born in 3940 BC when Adam was 64 years old. He died in 3010 BC at the age of 930.
  • Habil was born in 3927 BC when Adam was 77 years old.
  • Prophet Sheeth عليه السلام was born when Adam was 130 years old.

The marriage of Habil

At that time, all the children of Prophet Adam عليه السلام were brothers and sisters so they were allowed to marry each other. So, the root cause of the first murder in the world was a woman.

According to Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه Habil wanted to marry Qalima, the girl born with Qabil as she was very beautiful and Qabil was also interested to marry that girl.

Prophet Adam عليه السلام told Qabil to let Habil marry this girl but he did not agree. On that, they were required to sacrifice an animal for Allah.

Why did Qabil kill Habil?

Habil was a shepherd so he presented a healthy animal for the sacrifice while Qabil offered a weak one. Fire came through the heavens and took the healthy animal while leaving the animal offered by Qabil.

Upon this, Qabil got jealous and threatened to kill his brother as described in the Quran.

Relate to them in truth ˹O Prophet˺ the story of Adam’s two sons—how each offered a sacrifice: Habil’s offering was accepted while Qabil’s was not. So Qabil threatened, “I will kill you!” His brother replied, “Allah only accepts ˹the offering˺ of the sincerely devout. – Al-Ma’idah 5:27

The first murder on Earth

Upon this Habil replied: If you raise your hand to kill me, I will not raise mine to kill you, because I fear Allah—the Lord of all worlds. – Al-Ma’idah 5:28

Still, Qabil took a dragger and killed his brother Habil becoming the first murderer to kill a human being in the world. He was truly among the losers. – Al-Ma’idah 5:30

Allah sent a crow

Allah sent a crow to that spot who was digging the grave of another crow to tell Qabil how to bury the dead bodies.

Then Allah sent a crow digging ˹a grave˺ in the ground ˹for a dead crow˺, in order to show him how to bury the corpse of his brother. –  Al-Ma’idah 5:31

Qabil regretted his mitskae

After killing his brother Habil, Qabil regretted his mistake but it was too late. Later, went astray and continued the wrong path. Sometimes, he caused some problems for his brother Prophet Sheeth عليه السلام too.

He cried, “Alas! Have I ˹even˺ failed to be like this crow and bury the corpse of my brother?” So he became regretful. – Al-Ma’idah 5:31

Habil Grave

Although some people consider Habil a Nabi, the opinion of the majority of scholars is that he was not a Nabi. Habil was born in 3927 BC and killed in 3905 BC at the age of 22 years in present-day Syria.

The tomb or the grave of Habil is also in Damascus, Syria. However, no one knows where is the grave of Qabil.
