7 Sunnah of drinking water in Islam

There are 7 Sunnah of drinking water in Islam with their scientifically-proven benefits. Drinking water can be harmful if not drunk properly.

Drinking in a clean glass

It is a sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to look into the utensil before drinking water to ensure that the glass is clean and there is no insect inside.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: You should not drink from a vessel at night without stirring it first unless the vessel was covered. – Sunan Ibn Majah 3431

Recite Bismillah

It is another sunnah to recite بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيم before drinking water. In fact, one should recite Bismillah before every good deed. This way we praise Allah who gave us water to drink without which survival is impossible. –

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: Mention the Name of Allah (i.e., say Bismillah) when you start drinking water – Riyad as-Salihin 757.

Drink Water with the right hand

It is also a sunnah to drink water with either the right hand or both hands. However, you should not drink water with your left hand alone.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: Do not eat with your left hand, for Satan eats with his left hand. – Sunan Ibn Majah 3268

Sit down to drink water

It is a sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to sit down to drink water. Drinking water while standing, walking, and running is dangerous as it can slip into the oxygen tract. However, in some conditions, you can also drink water while standing.

Drinking in 3 breathes

Once shall drink water in three breathes: Drinking water in a single gulp is unhealthy.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: Do not drink in one gulp like a camel, but in two or three (gulps) – Riyad as-Salihin 757.

Do not breathe in the glass

Another etiquette of drinking water taught by Islam is not to breathe in the water utensil. 

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:  while drinking water you should not breathe in the drinking utensil. – Sahih al-Bukhari 154

The science reveals that while we exhale in water, the carbon dioxide reacts with water resulting in carbonic acid. Carbonic acid can alter our pH level and can lead to Acidosis. 

Recite Alhamdulillah

Always recite “Alhamdulillah” /”الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ” [ (All) praise is (due) to Allah ] once you are done with drinking water.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: say Alhamdulillah after you are done with drinking water. – Riyad as-Salihin 757.
