9 Sunnah Acts every Muslim should follow on the day of Eid

Eid comes two times in a year as a day of celebration. Eid ul Fitr comes after a month of prayers, sacrifice, and dedication. Eid ul Adha is practiced to follow the Sunnah of Hazrat Ibrahim A.S.

These religious holidays are celebrated by the Muslim population all around the world, regardless of sect, creed or nationality. Everyone greet one another on the day of Eid. We should take out the time from our daily routines and spend the maximum amount of time with our families. Muslims should spend these holidays indulging in the following Sunnah activities;

01-Take Bath and wear Perfume: It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘This day is an ‘Eid (festival) which Allah has ordained for the Muslims. Whoever comes to Friday (prayer), let him take a bath and if he has perfume then let him wear some on. And upon you (I urge to use) is the tooth-stick.” Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 5, Hadith 1098

02-Eat the Odd number of Dates: Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) never proceeded (for the prayer) on the Day of `Id-ul-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates. Anas also narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to eat odd number of dates. Sahih al-Bukhari 953

03-Go for Eid Walking: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to go out to the ‘Eid prayers walking, and come back walking.” Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 5, Hadith 1295

04-Take your families with you: It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to bring his daughters and his wives out on the two ‘Eid. Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 5, Hadith 1309

05-Don’t take any weapon with you: It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that the Prophet (ﷺ) forbade wearing weapons in the Muslim lands on the two ‘Eid, except if the enemy was present. Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 5, Hadith 1314

06-Take different routes: “When Allah’s Messenger would go out on the day of Eid by one route, he would return by another.” Jami` at-Tirmidhi 541

07-Spend Eid Nights in Ibadah: It was narrated from Abu Umamah that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever spends the nights of the two ‘Eid in praying voluntary prayers, seeking reward from Allah, his heart will not die on the Day when hearts will die.” Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 7, Hadith 1782

08-Zakat-ul-Fitr: It was narrated that: Ibn Abbas said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) enjoined Zakatul-Fitr as a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscenities, and to feed the poor.

Whoever pays it before the (Eid) prayer, it is an accepted Zakah, and whoever pays it after the prayer, it is (ordinary) charity.” Sunan Ibn Majah 1827. Recommended: How much is Zakat-ul-Fitr or Fitrana in Saudi Arabia?

09-Don’t Fast: It was narrated that Abu ‘Ubaid said: “I was present for ‘Eid with ‘Umar bin Khattab. He started with the prayer before the sermon and said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade fasting on these two days, the Day of Fitr and the Day of Adha.

As for the Day of Fitr, it is the day when you break your fast, and on the Day of Adha you eat the meat of your sacrifices.’” Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 7, Hadith 1722

On this blessed holiday, all Muslims around the world should aim to eradicate the animosity which may have been accumulated over the rest of the year.
