Out of the names of 49 people mentioned in the Holy Quran, one is Qarun from the time of Prophet Musa عليه السلام. Here is the story of Qarun as mentioned in the Holy Quran.
- Full Name: Qarun Ibn Yashab Ibn Qahith Ibn Azar Ibn Levi Ibn Yaqub عليه السلام.
- Biblical Name: Korah.
Who was Qarun?
Qarun was actually a cousin of Prophet Musa عليه السلام. In other words, he was from Bani Israel. Yashab Ibn Qahith was the father of Qarun and Imran Ibn Qahith was the father of Prophet Musa عليه السلام.
Allah mentions the name of Qarun 4 times in the Holy Quran. He was one of the richest people in the world around 1300 BC.
Due to Qarun’s close association with Pharaoh, he became very rich and started to behave arrogantly towards his own people. Prophet Musa عليه السلام advised him not to be prideful! Surely Allah does not like the prideful.
Treasures of Qarun
Allah had granted Qarun such treasures that even their keys would burden a group of strong men. – Al-Qasas 28:76
Refusal to Zakat
Prophet Musa عليه السلام asked him repeatedly to pay Zakat to help poor Israelis and seek the reward of the Hereafter by means of what Allah has granted you.
Upon this Qarun said: I have been granted all this because of some knowledge I have. – Al-Qasas 28:78
When Qarun used to go out before his people in glamour, those who desired the life of this world wished, “If only we could have something like what Korah has been given. He is truly a man of great fortune!”
But those gifted with knowledge said, “Shame on you! Allah’s reward is far better for those who believe and do good.
Qarun in the court of Pharoah
When Prophet Musa عليه السلام and Prophet Harun عليه السلام came to invite Pharoah to accept Islam, Qarun was there in the court as an advisor to Pharoah.
When Prophet Musa عليه السلام threw his staff and it became a big snake. Then he drew his hand ˹out of his collar˺ and it was ˹shining˺ white for all to see.
Although their hearts were convinced the signs were true, they still denied them wrongfully and arrogantly. – An-Naml 27:14
Pharoah, Qarun, and Haman said: “Magician! Total liar!” – Ghafir 40:24
The blame for Adultery
Qarun gave a prostitute a sum of money to accuse Prophet Musa عليه السلام of doing Zina while he was in front of his people. When she blamed Musa, he fell into sajdah and sought Allah’s help.
- Prophet Musa عليه السلام asked her: By Allah! Tell me, who hired you to
- She said: It was Qarun who hired me to do that.
- Upon this, Musa cursed Qarun.
Earth swallowed Qarun
Allah revealed to Prophet Musa عليه السلام that He has subjugated the earth to obey him.
Prophet Musa عليه السلام commanded the earth to swallow up Qarun and his mansion saying: “O earth! Take them! And it took them to their feet.
- Then again he said: Take them! And it took them to their knees.
- Then again he said: Take them! And it took them to their shoulders.
- Then again he said: O earth! Bring their riches and treasures! Then Prophet Musa عليه السلام pointed with his hand and they also sank into the earth.
Allah says: We caused the earth to swallow him up, along with his home. There was no one to help him against Allah, nor could he even help himself. – Al-Qasas 28:81
