Today, we have selected 12 favorite food items that were loved by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Some say eating these foods only for the following sunnah also tends to heal one spiritually. So, know about these foods and try to add them to your diet.
Barley (شعير) is a food that is similar to wheat. However, it is healthier than it. Barley has many benefits and, therefore, is essential for human health. It is also helpful in reducing fever when cooked in a soup form.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ bought some barley from a Jew on credit and mortgaged his iron armor to him. – Sahih al-Bukhari 2251
Dates (تمر) were by no doubt the favorite food of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He would eat dates regularly. Dates are full of nourishment and make the body strong. It is also helpful for pregnant women as it provides nourishment to the little one as well.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once said: Eat unripe dates with ripe ones and eat old dates with new ones. – Sunan Ibn Majah 3330
Figs (تين) are known as one of the fruits of the heavens. This not only makes figs extraordinarily tasty but also beneficial. The figs can help in revealing constipation and piles.
- In the Holy Quran, Allah swears on figs. وَٱلتِّينِ وَٱلزَّيْتُونِ – At-Tin 95:1
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised his companions to eat black seeds, which makes us believe that he used to like this food item too.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: You should eat this black seed (Kalonji), for in it there is healing from every disease, except the Sam (death). – Sunan Ibn Majah 3448
Honey (عسل), in its pure form, has the most health benefits. It helps in fighting diarrhea. It is beneficial for the body and helps cure a cold and cough.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: Whoever eats honey three mornings each month will not suffer any severe calamity. – Sunan Ibn Majah 3450
The most magical and beneficial liquid known to mankind is Milk (حليب). The most significant source of calcium helps in gaining solid and healthy bones. A glass of milk is a complete pack of energy and nourishment.
There are many hadith which prove that milk was one of the favorite foods of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Anas bin Malik رضي الله عنه said: I saw Prophet Muhammad ﷺ drinking milk. He came to my house, and I milked a sheep and then mixed the milk with water from the well. He took the bowl and drank. – Sahih al-Bukhari 5612
Olives (زيتون) and Olive oil are helpful in multiple ways. It is one of those fruits that have been mentioned in the Holy Quran and in many Hadith.
In the Holy Quran, Allah swears on olives. وَٱلتِّينِ وَٱلزَّيْتُونِ – At-Tin 95:1
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: Eat (olive) oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it is blessed. – Sunan Ibn Majah 3320
The pomegranate (رمان) is the fruit of Jannah, as mentioned in the Quran.

- In both will be fruit, palm trees, and pomegranates. – Ar-Rahman 55:68
Melon (بطيخ) was also one of the favorite fruits of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as he used to eat dates with melon. – Sunan Ibn Majah 3326
Abdullah ibn Busr رضي الله عنه said: Prophet Muhammad ﷺ came to visit us, and we offered him butter and dates, for he liked butter and dates. – Sunan Abi Dawud 3837
Although most of the time, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ate vinegar (خل) when there was nothing else to eat, it was one of his favorite foods.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: What an excellent condiment vinegar is. – Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1839
Pumpkin (يقطين) was also one of the favorite vegetables of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The soup of pumpkins is full of vitamins A and C and a good source of antioxidants.
Anas Ibn Malik رضي الله عنه said: A tailor invited Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to a meal which he had prepared. I went along with him to that feast. The tailor presented barley bread, soup containing pumpkin, and sliced pieces of meat.
I saw Prophet Muhammad ﷺ going after the pumpkin around the dish, so I have always liked the pumpkin since that day. – Sahih Muslim 2041
