India restarts COVID testing for int’l flights

India has restarted random COVID testing for international passengers at all airports.

Why?

The decision comes after India detected cases of Omicron subvariant BF.7, the strain behind the fresh spurt in Covid cases in China.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said: Covid is not over yet. I have directed all concerned to be alert and strengthen surveillance. We are prepared to manage any situation.

What is random testing?

Random testing means selecting people for a test arbitrarily. For example, the staff will pick 2% of international passengers especially those with high body temperature or with some other symptoms for COVID testing.

COVID cases in India

With more than 44 million COVID infections to date, India reported the most cases in the world after the United States.

Despite such a huge number, only 27% of the Indian population has taken the COVID vaccine which put them under a big threat of another deadly spread of the virus.
