How much do I have to walk to perform Hajj? What is the Hajj walking distance between Mina, Arafat, Jamarat, Muzadalifa, and Masjid al-Haram?
Before performing Hajj in 2017, I was also curious about the distance I would have to cover walking in the five days of Hajj, starting from the 8th of Dhul Hijjja to the 12th of Dhul Hijja.
8th of Dhul Hijjah
You need to reach Mina on the 8th of Dhul Hijja. Wherever you are, your Hajj agent will transport you to the Mina Camp booked for you. You can roam around a bit to see your Mina camp’s outskirts.
If you see in my meter, I walked for a distance of 7.8km that day. I had to go to a Pharmacy to buy medicine for my wife.
9th of Dhul Hijja
The movement from Mina to Arafat
9th Dhul Hijjah is the day of Hajj. You must walk from your Mina Camp to the Train Station near you. In my case, the walking distance from my Mina camp to the train station was around 2km which would take me to Arafat on the day of Hajj.
The Train from Mina Train Station will take you to the Arafat Train Station. Now you will have to walk from Arafat Train Station to the Arafat Camp, the distance will vary, but in my case, it was around 2 Km.
Mina to Arafat Walking Distance
Many people would love to cover the distance walking between Mina and Arafat on the day of Hajj, which is not recommended under the scorching Sun and immense heat. You will spend a long day preserving your energy for other activities.
- Distance between Mina Train Station 1 and Mount Arafat is 11.2 Km
- Distance between Mina Train Station 2 and Mount Arafatis 12 Km
- Distance between Mina Train Station 3 and Mount Arafat is 14.6 Km
The movement from Arafat to Muzdalfah
You will stay in Arafat for the full day; after sunset or whenever your agent requires, you must cover the distance by walking to the Arafat Train Station.
This time is a crowded time as everyone moves from Arafat to Muzdalfah. Again, I had to walk for a distance of 2km from Arafat camp to Arafat train station on the day of Hajj.
The Arafat 2 Train Station train will take you to the Muzdalfa 2 Train Station. Your agent will take you to the Muzdalfa tents he has arranged for you here. We had to walk for a distance of 2km from Muzdalfa Train Station to the Muzdalfah tents on the night of Hajj.
You will pray Maghrib and Isha together and stay under the sky till Fajr. My Health Meter shows that I walked for 9.4 km on this day.
Arafat to Muzdalfah Walking Distance
Many people would love to cover the distance walking between Arafat and Muzdalfah on the night of Hajj, which is not recommended. You will spend a long night and preserve your energy for other activities.
- Distance between Arafat to Muzdalifah Train Station 2 is 10 Km.
- Distance between Arafat to Muzdalifah Train Station 3 is 10.7 Km.
10th of Dhul Hijja
The movement from Muzdalfah to Mina
At Fajr time or whenever your agent asks you to move, you must return to the Muzdalfa train station. Once again, it is a walking distance of 2km. The Train from Muzdalfa 2 will take you either to Mina 2 Train Station (where your camp is located) or Jamarat.
This is the peak time for Jamarat as everyone wants to perform the ritual of stoning the devil at the earliest.
I decided to drop at Mina 2 Train Station and walk back to Mina Camp to take some rest, for which I had to cover a distance of 2 km. However, due to heavy traffic, it took us 30 minutes to reach Mina Camp.
Muzdalfah to Mina Walking Distance
Once again, you will find many people covering the distance walking between Muzdalfah and Mina on this day of Hajj, which is not a bad idea as the distance between Muzdalifah to Mina is not much.
- Distance between Muzdalifah Train Station 3 to Mina Train Station 3 is 5.0 Km.
- Distance between Muzdalifah Train Station 3 to Mina Train Station 2 is 2.2 Km.
- Distance between Muzdalifah Train Station 3 to Mina Train Station 1 is 1.3 Km.
- Distance between Muzdalifah Train Station 2 to Mina Train Station 3 is 5.7 Km.
- Distance between Muzdalifah Train Station 2 to Mina Train Station 2 is 3.1 Km.
- Distance between Muzdalifah Train Station 2 to Mina Train Station 1 is 2.1 Km.
The movement from Muzdalfah to Mina
We went to perform Rami to Jamarat after Asr prayer, which was quite peaceful then. The Jamarat from my camp in Mina was at a distance of 2km. In total, it was a distance of 4km, and we had to walk between Mina and Jamarat up and down on the third day of Hajj.
After this, you can perform Hadee (sacrifice an animal) if you are performing Hajj Qiran or Hajj Tamattu and shave your head and come out of Ihram. There is no need to perform Hadee if you are performing Hajj Ifrad. I walked around 10.4km that day.
Mina to Jamarat Walking Distance
Once again, you will find many people covering the distance walking between Mina to Jamarat on the third day of Hajj, which is not a bad idea if your camp is located near to this place.
- Distance between Mina Train Station 1 to Jamarat is 3.6 Km.
- Distance between Mina Train Station 2 to Jamarat is 2.8 Km.
11th of Dhul Hijja
One of the Fard acts of Hajj is to perform Tawaf Ziyara or Tawaf Ifada. We went to perform Tawaf Ziyara on the 11th of Dhul Hijja. There is no proper transport system from Mina to Masjid aal-Haramso we had to walk around 3km to take a taxi.
Taxi charged SR 100 and dropped us near Masjid al-Haram. After that, we performed Tawaf and Saee. Normally Masjid al-Haram is too crowded on the 11th of Dhul Hijja. It is better to perform it on the 10th of Dhul Hijja. I think I walked in Masjid al-Haram for around 6km to perform Tawaf Ziyara.
If you are performing Hajj Qiran or Hajj Tamattu, you must also perform Tawaf Wida. It is Sunnah to perform it after performing Rami of 12th of Dhul Hijjah. However, according to the scholar assigned to our group, old pilgrims, disabled pilgrims, and pilgrims with children can perform Tawaf Ifada and Tawaf Wida in the same go. People performing Tawaf Wida can add one more km to their estimated walk.
On the way back to Mina, it isn’t easy to get a taxi. Taxi drivers charged as much as SR 400 for 10 mins drive. I managed to hire one for SR 150. They dropped us at the same place, and we had to walk again for 3km to come back to our Mina camp.
The day is not yet finished; you will have to go to perform Rami to Jamarat on the second day. It is again at a distance of 2km from our Mina Camp. So in aggregate, 4km. My health meter shows that I walked 17.9 km that day.
Mina to Masjid al-Haram Walking Distance
- Distance between Mina Train Station 1 to Masjid al-Haram is 10.7 Km.
- Distance between Mina Train Station 2 to Masjid al-Haram is 9.8 Km.
- Distance between Mina Train Station 3 to Masjid al-Haram is 7.0 Km.
12th of Dhul Hijja
Now, this is the last day to stay in Mina. You can stay until the 13th of Dhul Hijja, but I decided to return to Jeddah on the 12th of Dhul Hijja. I went to Jamarat again, which is 4km up and down, and walked to the Bus parked near our camp. You can see I walked for 5km that day.
In aggregate, I walked for around 50km in 5 days. If you reduce my trip to Pharmacy on the 9th of Dhul Hijja, it is a walk of around 44km purely for Hajj purposes.
