What is Fitra?
Zakat-al-Fitr, which is also known as Fitrana or Fitra, is an obligatory portion of food items that are to be given as charity before Eid prayer. We have explained fitrana calculation, given a fitra calculator and the fitrana amount to pay in Saudi Arabia for 2023.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: Zakat-ul-Fitr on the one who fasts in Ramadan is to purify him from any indecent act or speech and for the purpose of providing food for the needy. – Bulugh al-Maram.

Each Muslim should give Zakat ul Fitr which is equal to the amount of one sa’a of grain.
- 1 sa’a = 3 kilograms or 6.5 pounds.
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ said: We used to take out as the Zakat of Fitr;
- one sa’ of grain or;
- one sa’a of barley or;
- one sa’a of dates or;
- one sa’a of cheese or;
- one sa’a of raisins.

Fitrana in Cash or Food Supplies?
Generally, it is recommended that the payment of Sadqa e Fitr is made in the form of food supplies and not in the form of cash.
Abu Sa’id al Khudri رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ reported: We used to take out the Zakat of Fitr in three kinds, cheese, dates, and barley. – Sahih Muslim 985d
However, some ulemas believe that it is completely fine if you pay Zakat ul Fitr in form of cash equivalent to the amount discussed above. Source: Arab News
Fitra amount in 2023
It is recommended that the maximum possible price of a kilogram of rice which is SAR 10 be used as a measure, and an amount of SAR 30 be paid by each Muslim as fitra in Saudi Arabia for 2023.
- A family of 5 members should pay SAR 150 as Zakat al Fitr.
- This is the minimum amount to be paid as fitrana in Saudi Arabia for the year 2023. If Allah has blessed you with His bounties, you should pay more.
When to pay Fitra?
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: Zakat al-Fitr is accepted as Zakah for the person who pays it before the Eid prayer and it is Sadaqah for the person who pays it after the Eid prayer. – Bulugh al-Maram.
One must make fitra in the last 02 days or even hours prior to the Eid Prayer. It is better if it is paid after sighting the moon of Shawwal and before the Eid prayer.
Who needs to pay Fitrana?
Fitra is obligatory on every individual Muslim whether it is a man, woman, child or adult, healthy or sick, young or old.
The senior head of the household is essentially responsible for paying the amount on behalf of his family and dependents.
Whom to pay Fitra or Fitrana?
The Zakat ul Fitr is meant for those families of the Muslim community who do not have enough means to feed themselves and their family members and dependents.
Traditionally it is given to individuals directly, however, in some places, the local mosque collects the food and then distributes it itself.
