When Muaddin (a person who calls for Adhan) calls Azan, there are 4 Sunnahs to be followed including the Dua after Adhan.
Answering Adhan
There is a Hadith where Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has explained the method to answer Adhan. – Sahih Muslim 385
- Answer “الله اكبر الله اكبر” by saying “الله اكبر الله اكبر“.
- respond “اشهد ان لا اله الا الله” by saying “اشهد ان لا اله الا الله“.
- reply “اشهد ان محمدا رسول الله” by saying “اشهد ان محمدا رسول الله.
- Answer “حي على الصلاة” by saying “لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ“.
- respond “حي على الفلاح” by saying “لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ“.
- reply “الله اكبر الله اكبر” by saying “الله اكبر الله اكبر“.
- Answer “لا اله الا الله” by saying “لا اله الا الله“.
During Fajr Azan when Muaddin says, “الصلاة خير من النوم” answer it with “الصلاة خير من النوم“.
Invoke blessings on Prophet Muhammad
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when you hear Muaddin, repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on me, for everyone who invokes a blessing on me will receive ten blessings from Allah. – Sahih Muslim 384
Therefore before reciting the Dua for Azan, one should recite Durood Ibrahimi.
- اللهم صــل علٰی محمد و علٰی آل محمد كما صليت علٰی إبراهيم و علٰی آل إبراهيم انك حميد مجيد
- اللهم بارك علٰی محمد و علٰی آل محمد كما بار كت علٰی إبراهيم و علٰی آل إبراهيم انك حميد مجيد
Dua after Azan
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: Whoever after listening to the Adhan says this dua ↓ (given below), then my intercession for him will be allowed on the Day of Resurrection. – Sahih al-Bukhari 614
- اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ وَالصَّلاَةِ الْقَائِمَةِ آتِ مُحَمَّدًا الْوَسِيلَةَ وَالْفَضِيلَةَ وَابْعَثْهُ مَقَامًا مَحْمُودًا الَّذِي وَعَدْتَهُ، حَلَّتْ لَهُ شَفَاعَتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
English translation of the Dua after Adhan
O Allah! Lord of this perfect call (perfect by not ascribing partners to You) and of the regular prayer which is going to be established, give Muhammad the right of intercession and illustriousness and resurrect him to the best and the highest place in Paradise that You promised him (of).
Shahada after Adhan
After reciting the dua for Azan, one should also recite Shahada.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: If anyone says Shahada (given below) after hearing Adhan, his sins would be forgiven. – Sahih Muslim 386
- أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ رَضِيتُ بِاللَّهِ رَبًّا وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ رَسُولاً وَبِالإِسْلاَمِ دِينًا
Wordings of Azan
- الله أكبر، الله أكبر
- أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله
- أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله
- أشهد أن محمدًا رسولُ الله
- أشهد أن محمدًا رسولُ الله
- حيَّ على الصلاة

English translation
- God is Great! God is Great! God is Great! God is Great!
