Many youngsters want to know if masturbation or hand practice breaks fast as per Islam. There is no shame in (asking and disseminating) the affairs of the religion so read and share it with others.
Does masturbation break the fast?
According to Islam, masturbation while fasting breaks the fast if sperms are ejaculated (or sexual vaginal secretions in the case of women).
However, hand practice does not break a fast if it does not result in ejaculation of sperms. Still, it is a prohibited act while fasting and one should stay away from it.
Hadith related to Masturbation
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “Allah ﷻ said: The Fast is for Me and I will give the reward for it, as he (the one who observes the fast) leaves his sexual desire, food, and drink for My Sake. – Sahih al-Bukhari 7492
What if I masturbate while fasting?
If you are someone who has masturbated while fasting in the holy month of Ramadan, you will have to offer a Qada, not Kaffara.
- Qaza for fasting: One-day fasting after Ramadan.
- Kaffara for fasting: free a slave or fast for two months or feed 60 poor people.
In other words, if you have broken your fast with masturbation, you will have to make up with one day of fasting after Ramadan.
Do wet dreams break the fast?
It is important to note that ejaculation resulting from wet dreams does not break the fast. The human being does not have any control over dreams and therefore, Allah ﷻ does not punish us for that.
Some people have criticized us for writing on this topic as it is considered taboo in our culture. But I think it is more important to spread awareness in the youth about it so that nobody commits this sin without knowledge.
