Islam allows 4 marriages at a time: Islam allows Muslim men to have 4 wives at a time. This means that men can have 4 marriages at a time. However, this is an option and not a compulsion. The allowance of multiple marriages at a time is given with certain applied conditions.
Certain men take second or third and fourth marriage for granted. They are unaware of the rules they have to abide by. Certain men raise questions that if they are obliged to take permission from their first wife before entering a marriage contract with another woman?
Do we need to take permission from the first wife? The question was also asked from the famous Islamic Scholar Dr. Zakir. He responded that it is better than a husband informs his first wife before holding a second marriage, he shall ask for her willingness. This is a better act yet not a compulsion on men.
However, men are obliged in certain circumstances to take permission from their first wife before entering into a second marriage contract. If the marriage contract imposed a condition on men that he cannot marry without permission, he is ought to take permission.
If a man entered a marriage contract that said that he is to take permission from his wife for a second marriage, he is obliged to do so. During Nikah, women are allowed to impose such conditions on men.
Conditions stated in the Marriage Contract: However, if no such condition is stated in the marriage contract, man can opt for second marriage without taking permission of his first wife. However, it would be better if he takes permission and informs his first wife about it.
