I am sure while reading this; you must be thinking the same. There are various factors to consider before assessing your ideal weight. Ideal body weight for every individual is different. So don’t compare yourself and aim your weight with a friend, relative or family member.

You might aim it too high or too low. Few factors that matters are Height, Age, Sex, and Muscle to fat ratio, Bone density, and Nature of work etc. There are a number of methods to determine if you are overweight.

BODY MASS INDEX: BMI is said to be very accurate in estimating your ideal weight by some, whereas it is said to be inaccurate by others as it does not consider the waist to hip ratio and muscle mass. This method establishes a relationship between height and weight, by correlating your height with the ideal weight through a chart.  Following are the formulas to know if you are underweight, normal or obese.

• Weight in kgs, divided by square of height in meters – For example: 60kg/ (1.76)2 m2 = 19.4
• Weight in pounds into 703, divided by square of height in inches – For example 140lbx703/ (69.6)2= 20.31
• Less than 18.5 means underweight
• 5-25 means ideal weight
• 25-30 means overweight
• Greater than 30 means obese

WAIST-HIP RATIO: It is the ratio of the circumference of your waist to that of hips. The smallest circumference of the waist is divided by the widest circumference of hips.  For example, if the waist is 32inches and hips 36 inches then WHR is 0.88. If it is:

• Less than 0.9 in males/0.8 in females- fewer heart problems
• 9-0.99 in males/0.8-0.89 in females- moderate risk of heart problems
• More than 1 in males/0.9 in females- high risk of heart problems.

WAIST-HEIGHT RATIO: It is a good indicator to predict risks of diseases like that of heart, diabetes, stroke, and hypertension as compared to BMI. As a standard, it is said that the circumference of waist should be less than half of the height of an individual. For example, a woman with height 5ft 7inches (67 inches) should have a waist of fewer than 33.5 inches.

PERCENTAGE OF BODY FAT: It is a percentage of the weight of body fat to total weight. A man with body fat percentage over 25% and a female with over 31% is said to be overweight. Gym instructors and doctors have devices to measure fat.

In a nutshell, knowing one’s weight and the ideal weight is really important to protect one from various problems. It is better to keep yourself fit and healthy from the start, to have a comfortable life as you grow old with less systemic diseases.
