Can a husband use wife’ salary?

In many households, both men and women work and earn money, which leads to the question of whether a husband can use his wife’s salary. Does the wife have a right to spend her husband’s salary without permission?

The responsibility to provide for

According to Islam, the responsibility to provide for food, clothing, and all other household needs lies with the man. In other words, if he is spending money on his family, it is not a favor but his duty.

“Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, as Allah has blessed them with more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means.” – An-Nisaa‘ 4:34

Can a wife use her husband’s salary?

Before jumping to a conclusion, we want to mention some points;

• It is the husband’s responsibility to take care of house expenses.
• The wife has more rights to the husband’s income than his parents, even if they are poor.

A wife can use her husband’s salary on the household expenses with his permission. However, if the husband does not allow this, the wife cannot use his money even for the household’s basic needs.

Keeping the verses of the Quran in mind, husbands should allow and permit women to use their money on household expenses. However, if the husband does not allow it and he is not taking care of household needs, he will be sinful in the eyes of Allah.

Can a husband use her wife’s salary?

According to Islamic rulings, the woman can spend and utilize her money, salary, and property according to her wishes and will. Not only that, a husband does not have any right over the cash, income, and salary of his wife.

Accordingly, the husband can neither spend the wife’s income nor dispose of it without her consent and will.

If the wife is willing to spend her earnings on her husband, then it is up to her. If she does not want to, she is not obliged to. The husband cannot force the wife to contribute to household expenses as it is entirely his responsibility.
