Types Of Sandblaster

Siphon Sandblaster

The sandblaster uses the pressurized air received from the compressor to operate. The exit nozzle consists of a hopper which is non-pressurized and open and has two hoses which are connected out. The two hoses have specific uses. One is for supplying air, and the abrasive material shoots out of the second one.

Pressure Sandblaster

Just like siphon sandblaster, a pressure sandblaster also needs to use the pressurized air from the compressor for its operation. The only difference between the two types lies the manner the abrasive is sent into the nozzle before it gets pressurized out.

Sandblaster can cost a big hole in your pocket as they are on the expensive side. However, this cost can be saved by making a sandblaster at home. It is a tedious procedure but then you save quite a significant amount, so not a bad bet. Let us take a look at the steps involved in making a sandblaster:

List Of Things Required:

  • Siphon Blaster Nozzle or handle
  • One nonpressurized hopper
  • Three types of hoses; 2 ½ inches rubber hoses, one media hose, and one air hose
  • Welding machine
  • Power or hand drill
  • 5 HP compressor
  • 1-way control valve

All these materials should be of optimum quality and reliable brands. Any slack in class will directly affect the working of a sandblaster. All products must be purchased from known valve suppliers.

Steps Involved In Building A Sandblaster

Prepping

To start building a sandblaster, you need a strong base. For this case, you need to start with the hopper. Start by drilling a hole of one inch at the bottom of the hopper. This hole is required to weld the one-way control valve at its end.

Connecting

Now you will need the media hose and the siphon blaster handle or nozzle. You need to attach the media hose to one of the ends of the control valve. The second hose needs to be connected to the nozzle or handle.

Suction

On pressing the trigger of the blaster, you will see that the nozzle gets activated. This is due to the way it is attached. The nozzle when activated passes volume and high pressure through to the Venturi of the siphon blaster handle. This eventually causes the suction of air and media through the attached hoses.

Sandblasting

Now we come to the part where the actual sandblasting happens. The sand is embedded in the form of a sand pile at the very bottom of the hopper to be shot out accompanied by the compressed air. As the compressed air is shot out, it also draws the sand along with it through the hose. This creates a force termed as sandblasting force that in turn works on the item it is being used on.

Conclusion

This is a simple and effective way to build a sandblaster at home without much hassle. However, this sandblaster cannot be used for large productions. If you need more amount of pressure and air, then you’ll have to use a pressure sandblaster.
