9 Facts about Hazrat Jibrail A.S (Gabriel) from Quran and Hadith

Jibrail – The angel of Allah

Hazrat Jibrail (AS) is a name Muslims are quite aware with. We know that he is the Angel of Allah Almighty who used to bring down revelations. However, there are certain facts related to him about which we are not familiar with.

The purpose of this article is to make the people aware about Hazrat Jibrail (A.S) as per Quranic texts and authentic Hadith.

  1. Hazrat Jibrail A.S. has 600 wings

One of the hadiths relates that the angel was blessed with as many as 600 wings. Sahih al-Bukhari 3232

  1. He looked like a Sahabi Rasool Dehya ibn Kalbi R.A

People often wonder how does Jibrail look like? Hazrat Jibrail resembled Dehya ibn Kalbi (RA). Ibn Kalbi was one of the companions of the Prophet PBUH. It is narrated that Ibn Kalbi was a handsome man, the most handsome among companions of the Prophet PBUH.

Narrated Abu `Uthman: I was informed that Gabriel came to the Prophet (ﷺ) while Um Salama was with him. Gabriel started talking (to the Prophet). Then the Prophet (ﷺ) asked Um Salama, “Who is this?” She replied, “He is Dihya (al-Kalbi).”

When Gabriel had left, Um Salama said, “By Allah, I did not take him for anybody other than him (i.e. Dihya) till I heard the sermon of the Prophet (ﷺ) wherein he informed about the news of Gabriel.” The sub-narrator asked Abu `Uthman: From whom have you heard that? Abu `Uthman said: From Usama bin Zaid. Sahih al-Bukhari 4980

  1. Hazrat Jibrail A.S and Hazrat Ibrahim A.S

When the Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was thrown into the fire as a punishment for preaching Islam, the angel appeared and asked if the Prophet required help. The Prophet of Allah simply said that Allah is sufficient for him.

  1. Hazrat Jibrail A.S and Hazrat Ismail A.S

He would readily help the Prophets so much so that when the wife of Hazrat Ibrahim A.S, Hazrat Hajrah was left in the desert with their son Hazrat Ismail A.S, he (Gabriel) came to help when Hazrat Ismail cried for water. Gabriel helped the child to tap his heels hard so that the water of Zamzam spurred.

  1. Hazrat Jibrail A.S and Hazrat Maryam A.S

The Angel also came to Hazrat Maryam A.S and gave her the great news of Hazrat Isa A.S.  Maryam (AS) went towards east contemplate to live in seclusion. Gabriel A.S came there and gave her the news that she would be blessed with a boy.

  1. Hazrat Jibrail A.S and Hazrat Isa A.S

Maryam’s son, Isa (AS) was being hunched down by the people. The people wanted to kill him, so the Angel took him to Allah Almighty. A non-believer named Judas was then given looks of Isa and people killed him instead.

  1. Hazrat Jibril A.S and Prophet Muhammad S.A.W

The Angel was also made wali of the last Prophet PBUH. When Gabriel came down with the first revelation towards the Prophet PBUH, the Prophet PBUH was residing inside the cave of Hira. The Angel came in human form, squeezed the Prophet firmly and asked him to read.

Jibrail (AS) was also the guide of the Prophet PBUH. He would come down to teach the Prophet PBUH the right way. The way he taught the Prophet PBUH the Quran, he taught the Sunnah in a similar way.

  1. Hazrat Jibrail A.S and Hazrat Ayesha R.A

Gabriel which means slave of Allah is respected by the inhabitants of heavens. He is also known as the keeper of the secret as he would bring down the revelations.

The modest angel would not come towards the Holy Prophet PBUH when he used to rest in the lap of his wife Khadija (R.A). He would also not enter the room of the Prophet PBUH when Aisha R.A was not fully covered.

  1. An Instance when Hazrat Jibrail appeared in front of Sahabas

It has been reported by Umar (RA) that one day a man came out from nowhere and sat next to the Prophet PBUH. The man was dressed up in extreme white clothes and had extreme black hairs. He did not look like he had traveled to reach the Prophet PBUH while none of us recognized him.  

9.1 What is Islam? Hazrat Jibrail asked Prophet Muhammad S.A.W

He then put his knees against the knees of the Prophet and placed his hand on his thighs and then asked the Prophet about Islam. The Prophet PBUH replied that Islam is a religion which testifies that none is to be worshiped except Allah Almighty: He alone is the One who shall be worshiped and the Prophet Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, to establish and offer the prayers, to pay off the zakat, to keep fasts in the oh of Ramadan and to perform Hajj if one can. The man then astonished everyone by saying that Muhammad, you have spoken the truth.

9.2 What is Iman? Hazrat Jibrail asked Prophet Muhammad S.A.W

He then inquired from the Prophet that what Iman is. The Prophet replied that Iman is to have a belief in Allah, His books, His messengers, His Angels, to believe that the Day of Judgment will come and to believe in the good and evil divine decree.  He then exclaimed that Muhammad you have spoken the truth.
He then asked about Ihsan. The Prophet PBUH replied to worship Allah as if Allah is seeing one, yet one cannot see Allah. One knows that Allah is seeing him.

9.3 What are the signs of final hour? Hazrat Jibrail asked Prophet Muhammad S.A.W

He then asked about the final hour. The Prophet PBUH replied that neither the one who is asking knows more than the one who is being asked. So the man asked about the signs. The Prophet PBUH disclosed that a female slave shall be giving birth to her master; poor shepherds who would be without shoes, poorly dressed in insufficient clothes shall be constructing great buildings.

He then left saying that he had stayed for quite a time. The Prophet PBUH asked Omer that does he know that who the man was. Omer replied that the messenger of Allah knows the best. The Prophet PBUH then revealed that it was Hazrat Jibrail A.S who had came to teach them about the religion Islam. – Sunan an-Nasa'i 499
