Why do people wear gemstones and rings?
We have often seen people wearing a ring with different stones and gems. I have often seen some people wearing gemstones according to what their horoscope says. Some wear to gain, dignity, wealth prospect, however, some wear claiming it has healing power.
Some believe that wearing Gemstones and Rings is Shirk but what is the basic reality behind wearing stones and gems in Islam?
Wearing gemstones and rings is a Sunnah
As a Muslim, we have read various narrations by different Sahabas and religious scholars that encourage us to wear gemstones. The rings with gemstones have special importance in Islamic Culture and history.
It is the Sunnah of our Holy Prophet. We should wear it without any belief in them. Wearing Gemstone thinking these have the properties to help you or harm you is Shirk.
Narrated `Abdullah: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) wore gold or silver .. ring and placed its stone towards the palm of his hand. The people also started wearing gold rings like it, but when the Prophet (ﷺ) saw them wearing such rings, he threw away that golden ring and then wore a silver ring. – Sahih al-Bukhari 5865
Some Hadiths sources claimed that the Prophet wore a silver ring with the Gem Abyssinian while some say that the gem was Cornelian.
The Ring of Prophet Muhammad

Hazrat Anas Bin Malik narrated that the Holy Prophet got a silver ring with the word Mohammad the Apostle of Allah engraves on it. He said that the Prophet told us, I had a ring written Mohammad the messenger of Allah written on it but none of you should have the same engraving on his ring.
Hazrat Anas bin Malik also narrated that the Prophet of Allah wore a silver ring with an Ethiopian stone with the Inscription Allah Rasool Mohammad written on it. History claimed that Ali (R.A) brought that ring for our Holy Prophet.
The ring of Prophet Muhammad was a seal/stamp on letters
As Hazrat Anas R.A said when the Prophet intended to write a letter to the rulers and king He (SAW) got a silver ring written ‘Mohammad apostle of Allah’ and stamped its expression on the letters as at that time the rulers do not read any letter unless it was stamped with a seal.
- Imam Abu Hanifa says it is a Sunnah for the Islamic rulers to wear a Ring.
- Imam Malik Bin Anas says wearing ring is permissible and recommended, you should wear a ring, to imitate the Prophet PBUH. It is haram to wear if you wish to show off.
- Imam Hunbal says it is permissible but not recommended.
- Imam Shafi says it is Sunnah for all the people.
In which finger should I wear the ring?
Hazrat Ali R.A narrated that the Messenger of Allah forbade me to wear the ring on this finger which was the middle finger and the one next to it. – Sunan an-Nasa'i 5287
Hazrat Anas R.A related a hadith pointing toward the little finger of his left hand that the ring of Allah’s Apostle was on this. – Sahih Muslim 2095
Whereas Imam Shafi and Imam Jafar believe the ring should be worn in the right hand providing the below-mentioned hadith as a proof.
