Our Holy Prophet (PBUH) has left us with ways of doing different things called Sunnah, which not only help us spiritually but medical science has proved their health benefits also. The prominent thirteen Sunnah include
1-Starting with Bismillah: One should always start his meal by saying Bismillah.
2-Eating with the right hand: Always use the right hand for eating the meals.
Jabir b. ‘Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) having said: Do not eat with your left hand, for the Satan eats with his left hand. – Sahih Muslim 2019
3-Eat that nearest to you: ‘Umar bin Abu Salamah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), said to me, “Mention Allah's Name (i.e., say Bismillah before starting eating), eat with your right hand, and eat from what is near you.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
4-Eating on the Floor: It is mentioned that our Prophet (PBUH) used to prefer having the meals on the floor as he relates it to have a meal like a slave.
5-Eat with Three Fingers: Ka'b bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I saw Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) eating with three fingers (i.e., the thumb, the index finger, and the middle finger) and licking them after having finished the food. [Muslim].
6-Eating Together: Our Prophet (PBUH) has preached to eat together rather than eating separately. Salim bin ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar said: “I heard my father say: ‘I heard ‘Umar bin Khattab say: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Eat together and do not eat separately, for the blessing is in being together.’” Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 29, Hadith 3287
7-Never Overeat: In a hadith mentioned in Al-Tirmidhi (Sahih) our Prophet (PBUH) disliked the habit of overeating.
Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (S.a.w) saying: ‘The human does not fill any container that is worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat what will support his back. If this is not possible, then a third for food, a third for drink, and third for his breath.” Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2380
8-Never Criticize Food: Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) never criticized any food (he was invited to) but he used to eat if he liked the food, and leave it if he disliked it. Sahih al-Bukhari 5409
9-Tasty Food Should be Complimented: Tasty food should be complimented always.
10-Never Discard Any Food: Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Satan appears at everything done by you; he appears even at one's dinner. When a morsel of any of you falls, he should pick it up and remove any dirt on it, and then eat it.
He should not leave it for Satan, nor should he wipe his hand with the towel until he has licked his fingers, for he does not know in what portion of the food the blessing lies.” [Muslim].
11-Licking the Fingers: Jabir Bin Abdullah narrates that the Prophet said that one must lick his fingers after having a meal because you never know in which part of the food is the blessing.
Kaa'b bin Maalik Radiyallahu ‘Anhu says: “Prophet Muhammad S.A.W licked his fingers thrice (after eating)”.
12-Wiping Dish: Anas Ibn Malik narrates in Sahih Muslim “(The Prophet) commanded us to wipe our plates”.
13-Praise Allah: Narrated AbuSa'id al-Khudri: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) finished his food, he said: “Praise be to Allah Who has given us food and drink and made us Muslims.” – Sunan Abi Dawud 3850
