How to call Kunya ‘Abu XXX’ of someone who doesn’t have children?

The GCC countries have unique and incomparable customs and culture which are very much different from other countries. Peoples are not much familiar with the traditions of these Arab countries. The names in Arab countries are very unique.

The name of every single citizen is of extreme importance for him as it represents their whole family and their origin is traced on their names. They call other people’s name in a respectful manner.

If they don’t know the person name, they will call them saying Ustath rather than any other word. This is a respectful way to call a person. In Arabic, Ustath means Teacher or Professor.

Names of a person are not just an identity of that person but it is said that these names have a high impact on the person’s nature. Arabs usually confuse other people by their naming system. They usually call others with the name of their children.

If a person’s name is Mohammad and his son is Ali, so he will be called Abu Ali (in Arabic it means father of Ali). Abu means “father”. Calling someone with Kunya is a matter of great respect for Arabs. If you call someone Abu Ali, you are giving him the utmost respect.

If someone doesn’t have children and you want to call him with respect, you can use the following formula to transform his name to Kunya.

  • Ali will be replaced with Abu Hassan
  • Khaled with Abu Waleed
  • Hassan with Abu Ali
  • Ahmad would be replaced with Abu Shahab
  • Abdullah would be replaced with Abu Humaid

These are the alternative names taken for those who do not have children. These names are related to the Islamic history as these are the main figures of that time and the companions of Allah’s Prophet. We are very much aware of these names.

Ali was the cousin of our Prophet who had two sons Hassan and Hussain. His elder son was Hassan. That is why Ali was named as Abu Hassan and later Hassan had a son who he names Ali, so he was called Abu Ali, it is an opposite apply.

What if somebody doesn’t have children and his name is not among the names we have mentioned above? Well, in this case, you can call him with the name of his father. For example, if your father’s name is Yousuf and you don’t have children, people can call you Abu Yousuf.
