Why do we send out children abroad for education? As a general perspective, we ought to send our children abroad to pursue higher education as we doubt the standards of our own Universities. We want our children to be bright and intelligent and to have a great future. But why can’t we let them have a bright future in Saudi Arabia?
Why do we want to send them abroad to acquire a higher education? Why is it so that having an American-based University on our CV’s is so important? Well, this is because we have always thought that all good standards belong to the US and we have nothing of “that” standard. “Made in the US” is what attracts us the most!
We are no less than others: But, let’s just appreciate our work, our institution, and our people. We are no less than others and this thing can become a fact when we will start appreciating ourselves. We don’t need to look down upon us!
As I said, I have seen parents pushing their children to get admission to a US-based university or any other for that matter. They want their kids to go study in France, Canada or Japan for that matter. Parents have it in their mind that the future will be secured by letting their child pursue higher education abroad.
KAUST is among the best universities in the World: When the world has realized that KAUST is among the best universities in the world, we still have neglected this very fact. This story is shared by one of our Saudi fellows who went to the US to meet his son who was studying there on a scholarship.
He was sitting in a park in Washington when he heard a nearby couple talking about their son who was in Saudi Arabia studying on a scholarship.
Kurt, who was 60 years old, then invited him to have a talk with them. He and his wife had studied from Texas and Kurt himself was a dentist. They were in Washington for now for a personal reason.
Kurt, an American student in Saudi Arabia: When the discussion came to Saudi Arabia, Kurt told that his son had studied in the best university in Texas. He had gained his honors engineering degree. Yet when he wanted to opt for higher education, he applied to multiple universities abroad and in most of them, he was accepted.
Surprisingly, he had also applied at the King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST). He asked his adviser about the university selection and he told that he must join KAUST. He thereby selected the university and went to study there.
Kurt enjoys studying in KAUST: Soon the kid himself, who was a young gentleman now, accompanied his parents to the park and told started to tell them that how well he enjoys study at KAUST and is living happily. He could now also name some of the famous Arabian and even make few. He has made friends who mainly belonged to Thuwal and Jeddah.
Ironic isn’t it? the Saudi parent was in Washington to meet his son who was studying there on a scholarship and then there was this American couple accompanied by their son who had come from Saudi Arabia after studying on scholarship!
