5 unknown facts about Evil Eye from Hadith and Sunnah

A large majority of Muslims believe in Evil Eye as the fact is supported by several Hadith of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. However, with this belief, many superstitious claims have been associated with it. In reality, these superstitious claims are far away from the reality.

Today, we are reproducing some Hadith about Evil Eye with proper references so that people can differentiate between true and false statements made with reference to Evil Eye.

1-Evil Eye is a fact:  There are many Muslims who don’t believe in the existence of Evil Eye. This Hadith is for those people.

Ibn ‘Abbas reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: The influence of an evil eye is a fact; if anything would precede the destiny it would be the influence of an evil eye, and when you are asked to take bath (as a cure) from the influence of an evil eye, you should take bath. –  Sahih Muslim 2188

2-Seek refugee from the Evil Eye:  It is important for all of us to seek refuge from the evil eye. The Prophet Muhammad S.A.W used to ask for protection from the Evil Eye.

It was narrated that Abu Sa'eed said: “The Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to seek refuge from the evil eye of the Jinn and the evil eye of humans. When Al-Mu'awwadhatan were revealed, he started to recite them and stopped reciting anything else.” – Sunan an-Nasa'i 5494

3-Evil Eye can overcome the Divine decree: Prophet Muhammad S.A.W has narrated that if there is anything which can overcome the divine decree, it is the evil eye of human beings.

Ibn ‘Abbas narrated that the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) said: “If there was anything that could overcome the Decree then the (evil) eye would overcome it, and when you are requested to wash (due to it) then wash.” – Jami` at-Tirmidhi Vol. 4, Book 2, Hadith 2062

4-Black Spot on the Face: Narrated Um Salama: that the Prophet (ﷺ) saw in her house a girl whose face had a black spot. He said. “She is under the effect of an evil eye; so treat her with a Ruqya.”Sahih al-Bukhari 5739

5-How to overcome the Black Eye? It has been mentioned in many Hadith that the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W instructed Sahaba to recite Ruqyah to overcome the Evil Eye. We have reproduced 2 Hadith with references below.

Narrated `Aisha: The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered me or somebody else to do Ruqya (if there was a danger) from an evil eye. – Sahih al-Bukhari 5738

It was narrated that ‘Ubaid bin Rifa’ah Az-Zuraqi said: “Asma’ said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! The children of Ja’far have been afflicted by the evil eye, shall I recite Ruqyah for them?’ He said: ‘Yes, for if anything were to overtake the Divine decree it would be the evil eye.’” – Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3510
