Ashab-e-Kahf were 7 people who slept for more than 3 centuries while hiding from a pagan king as mentioned in the Holy Quran and Bible. Here are the names and other amazing facts about Ashab-e-Kahf. 

Embracing Christianity

Back in 250 AD, there had been a Roman King by the name of Decius who used to hold an annual meeting which had been solely dedicated to the worship of Idols. Several people used to attend this meeting and be dressed in their best clothes.

However, one of the youngsters amongst the visitors believed in the oneness of Almighty Allah as well as the teachings of Prophet Isa عليه السلام while shunning pagan practices. He openly rebelled against the pagan practices in the society. He gathered one youngster after another who shared his belief.

Execution Order

When Roman King Decius came to know about this small rebellion he grew angry and ordered all of the rebels to be killed. In order to hold on to their faith, the youngsters fled and hid.

On their escape path, they came across a young farmer and his dog. They preached Christianity and the farmer too accepted the religion and decided to join them.

Ashab-e-Kahf Names

They eventually made their way to a cave located in present-day Jordan in which they prayed to Almighty Allah for ease. They then decided to rest there for a little time and left the dog as a guard. The names of Ashab-e-Kahf are mentioned in many Tafsirs of the Holy Quran are;

  1. Maksalmeena.
  2. Yamleekha.
  3. Martoonas.
  4. Baynoonas.
  5. Saarinoonas.
  6. Zoonwanas.
  7. Kashfitatnoonas.
  8. Dog Name: Qitmeer.

How long did they sleep?

Holy Quran mentions that Ashab-e-Kahf slept for 300 Gregorian years which translates into 309 lunar years. As the prevailing calendar was lunar in Makkah, Allah explained the duration of their sleep both in Gregorian and lunar calendars.

When the group woke up in 550 AD, they did not know how long they had been sleeping and thought it had only been a few hours.

They sent one of them to buy some food, however, the shopkeeper was shocked to see such old currency, and hence the reality of time caught up with the group.

They died soon

The Ruling King of that time Tandoosees had been a believer and came on foot to meet the group and seek their blessing. It is said that Ashab-e-Kahf and their dog died soon after telling the story of their sleep. They were buried in the cave where their bones can still be seen today.
