9 Religious Beliefs about marriages which are not true

A marriage between a man and a woman is a sacred relation. It makes all those intimate things Halal which are Haram outside the wedlock. When we grow-up at our homes, we are told to go to good schools and get some basic level of Islamic education which is just restricted to reading the Quran without understanding it.

As a result, we become doctors, lawyers, engineers, and accountants but we don’t understand the teachings of Islam. Today we address some religious beliefs about marriage which have nothing to do with Islam.[irp]

1-The wife must live with the parents of the husband and care for them: This is, in reality, a favor that most wives choose to carry out. However, there is no obligation as she is entitled to a separate residence after marriage.

2-The husband needs the permission of the first wife to marry again: Surah Al Nisa clearly states that “and if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice]”. Quran 4:3.

3-Wives cannot dissolve their own marriage: The wife is fully entitled to dissolving her marriage and Islam gives her the right to Khula, though in this situation the Haq Mahr will have to be returned. If the husband has not yet given the Haq Mahr to the wife, then it must be forgiven.

4-The only way to divorce is by saying it 3 times: In reality, there are 3 types of divorces in Islam; Talaq e Hassan, Talaq e Ahsan and Lian.

5-Divorced couples cannot remarry each other: This is not the case in Talaq E Ahsan. However only in the case of Talaq E Hasan and Lian, an intervening marriage also known as Halala is required in order for the couple to marry.

6-Husbands can beat their wives: This is absolutely not true. Muslim men are to treat their wives as princesses to the best of their ability. In Surah Al Nisa it is stated that men are the protectors and maintainers of women.

7-Islam permits forced marriages: Surah Al Nisa clearly stated that all those who have chosen to be graced with belief, it is not lawful for you to force women into marriage or hold on to them in marriage against their own will.

8-The Haq Mahr is payable only upon divorce: Surah Al Nisa states that give the women their dower on marriage as a gift, but they can choose to return all or part of it. Only then are you allowed to take the Haq Mahr and spend it or use it with good faith?

9-The wife does not have any right to maintenance: It states in the Quran that men are protectors and maintainers of women; as Allah has given one of them more strength than the other and because they support them from their own means.
