Viral videos give us the news apart from mainstream media. Social media is the fastest mean of traveling, for the news of course. The occurrence may be small in a town but the social media users take it as a big thing.
A story of a man from Uganda came viral on social media who married three women on the same day. A 50-year-old man named Mohammad Ssemanda held the function of his marriage because he lacks financial ability to hold three separate ceremonies.
Ssemanda, who is a food vendor in Kampala Suburb, remarried his bride Salamat Naluwugge, whom he had married 20 years ago and again renewed his marriage and he freshly married two sisters 27-year-old Jameo Nakaziya and 24 years old Mastulah Nakaziya.
When he was interviewed by the news he said that his wives are not jealous of each other and each of them has got a home, and he will work hard to support them.
His first wife said, “I thank our husband for marrying us all at once; it is a sign that he will not differentiate or take sides with any of us.”
After hearing this news, the people started criticizing Ssemanda and said that Islam forbids men from marrying two sisters at a time. Ssemanda has gone against the Islamic values. Moreover, the people criticized Sheikh Swaleh Mugenyi for performing the marriage rituals.
How can a Muslim man marry two sisters at a time when it is forbidden for a man to marry two sisters at a time. As it is said in Quran
“Prohibited to you [for marriage] are your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your father’s sisters, your mother’s sisters, your brother’s daughters, your sister’s daughters, your [milk] mothers who nursed you, your sisters through nursing, your wives’ mothers, and your step-daughters under your guardianship [born] of your wives unto whom you have gone in.
But if you have not gone in unto them, there is no sin upon you. And [also prohibited are] the wives of your sons who are from your [own] loins, and that you take [in marriage] two sisters simultaneously, except for what has already occurred. Indeed, Allah is ever forgiving and Merciful.” – Quran 4:23
Moreover, people on social media are debating about polygamy that Islam allows a man to marry more than one woman at a time and polygamy is allowed in Islam. But Allah has said in Quran that a man can only marry more than one woman if he treats her and all his other wives equally.
Polygamy is only permissible in Islam only if the man who is willing to marry more than one lady can do justice and possess sufficient financial resources to afford all the expenses of each family.
The man should possess the physical power to satisfy the sexual desire of each wife and the man should observe complete justice and equality among each family without any favoritism.
It is said in Quran, “and if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice] – Quran 4:3
