Islam tells us about the Evil Eye, as several Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ support the fact. However, it is also a fact that many superstitious claims have been associated with it. In reality, these superstitious claims are far away from reality.
Today, we are reproducing some Hadith about the Evil Eye with proper references so that people can differentiate between true and false statements concerning the Evil Eye in Islam.
Evil Eye is a fact
There are many Muslims who don’t believe in the existence of Evil Eye. This Hadith is for those people.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: The influence of an evil eye is a fact; if anything preceded destiny, it would be the influence of an evil eye, and when you are asked to take a bath (as a cure) from the influence of an evil eye, you should take a bath. – Sahih Muslim 2188
Seek refuge against evil eye
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge from the evil eye of the Jinn and the evil eye of humans. When Al-Mu’awwadhatan were revealed, he started to recite them and stopped reciting anything else.” – Sunan an-Nasa’i 5494
- Al-Mu’awwadhatan = Surah Falaq + Surah Naas.
Evil Eye can overcome the Divine decree.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “If there were anything that could overcome the Decree, then the (evil) eye would overcome it, and when you are requested to wash (due to it), then wash.” – Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2062
Black Spot on the Face
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ saw in her house a girl whose face had a black spot. He said. “She is under the effect of an evil eye; so treat her with a Ruqya.” – Sahih al-Bukhari 5739
How to Overcome the Black Eye?
It has been mentioned in many Hadith that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ instructed Sahaba to recite Ruqyah to overcome the Evil Eye. We have reproduced 2 Hadith with references below.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ordered to do Ruqya (if there was a danger) from an evil eye. – Sahih al-Bukhari 5738
Someone asked Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: The children of Ja’far have been afflicted by the evil eye; shall I recite Ruqyah for them?’
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Yes, for if anything were to overtake the Divine decree, it would be the evil eye.’” – Sunan Ibn Majah 3510
