5 reasons to wear wedding rings on the fourth finger of the left hand

Wedding rings are a sweet sign of everlasting love throughout history. Wedding ring represents a partner’s lifelong care and promises to love one another. The exchanging practice of rings has a meaning that has changed over thousands of years and every religion or country has different cultural meaning about exchanging wedding rings.

Like in the United States and many other Western countries, the tradition is to wear wedding rings on the fourth finger of the left hand. But in many other countries, tradition is to put a wedding ring on the right hand instead of left hand.[irp]

The concept of exchanging wedding rings came from ancient Egypt when people cut grasses into circles like rings representing eternity and wholeness. The Egyptians used to wear their rings on the fourth finger of the left hand having a belief that the vein of that finger runs directly to the heart. This is called the Vena Amoris or vein of love by Romans.

As compared to women, men usually wear fewer wedding rings. But in World War II, in Western countries; many wedded men who were living far from their home decided to wear wedding rings in the memories of their wives and families.  Now, modern people from different countries wear rings on both the left and right hands.

In western countries like North America, South America and European nations including UK, Italy, France and Slovenia couples wear the rings on their left hands. It totally depends on the couple’s personal choice that in which hand they wear the rings. In Asian countries, there is a fashion to wear the ring on the left hand. But, now many choose to wear the ring on the fourth finger of the right hand, as there are many reasons for this;

1-Own choice: There is no law in any country and culture that says you must wear a wedding ring on the left hand. It totally depends on a couple’s preference that in which finger or hand they want to wear the rings.

2-Different culture and traditions: Every culture has its own traditions and values. In Northern and Eastern European countries, it is a common practice to wear the ring on the fourth finger of the right hand.

3-Health issues: In India, there is a trend to wear rings on the right hand because they believe that the left hand is unclean and unlucky. Wearing a ring on one finger for a long time can cause skin infection and joint disease.

4-Left-handedness: If a wearer is left handed and wearing a wedding ring on the right hand this means that the person doesn’t want to get in the way of daily work. It can cause damage to his/her ring that’s why they prefer to wear the right-hand finger.

5-Symbol of love and forever bonding: If one person dies from the couple, it is usual for the living person to wear the wedding ring on the right-hand finger. This represents the love and forever bonding with the dead member.
