Tragic Collision on the Makkah–Medina Highway

A devastating accident early Monday has left 42 Umrah pilgrims feared dead after their bus collided with a diesel tanker and caught fire on the Makkah–Medina highway near Muhras (also reported as Mufrihat), approximately 160 km from Medina.

The pilgrims were travelling from Makkah to Medina when the collision occurred at around 1:30 am IST, a time when most passengers were believed to be asleep. The impact triggered a massive fire that engulfed the bus, leaving it “completely gutted” and severely complicating identification of the bodies.

Initial reports indicate that among the deceased may be 11 women and 10 children, though final confirmation awaits forensic identification. Only one person is believed to have survived, and their condition remains uncertain.

Scene of the Disaster

Rescue teams arriving at the site described horrific visuals: a burnt-out bus, charred remains, and only fragments of belongings scattered across the highway. The intense fire, fueled by the tanker’s diesel, left little chance for escape.

Authorities from Saudi Civil Defense and the Red Crescent swiftly began recovery operations, while the road was closed for several hours.

Indian Government’s Emergency Response

The tragedy has prompted immediate action from Indian authorities.
The Indian Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate in Jeddah have activated 24/7 emergency helplines and are coordinating with Saudi officials for identification, repatriation of remains, and assistance to survivors.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed deep shock and conveyed condolences, confirming that India is working closely with Saudi authorities to support the victims’ families.

The Consulate in Jeddah has also issued a toll-free helpline (800 244 0003) to assist families awaiting information.

Impact on Communities Back Home

Many of the pilgrims are believed to be from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed state officials to gather details from local communities, coordinate with the central government, and ensure support for the affected families.

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi stated that the bus belonged to a Hyderabad-based pilgrim group and urged authorities to prioritize repatriation and immediate relief measures.

Families in Hyderabad and surrounding areas remain in distress, repeatedly contacting travel operators and government helplines for updates.

Concerns Over Pilgrim Transport Safety

The accident has raised serious questions about:

  • Safety standards for long-distance pilgrim buses

  • Driver fatigue during late-night travel

  • Emergency escape mechanisms in buses

  • Oversight of private operators arranging Umrah transport

As millions travel annually for Umrah and Hajj, the incident has renewed calls for strengthening pilgrim safety protocols.
