Husband and wife are the lifetime companions. They share each other sorrows and are a source of happiness for each other. Marriage is indeed a beautiful relation, yet it is a great responsibility. A happy married life requires fulfilling responsibilities by both husband and wife.
Indeed, the society looks upon the female counterpart for holding the bond together. It is the wife who can make the environment of the house healthy and pleasant.
A wife is considered the key to success for a man, yet her poor behavior can lead to misfortunes. Islam prescribes some rights to wives which every woman should claim from her husband.
1-Helping in household work: Men need to be kind towards their wives. They should express their love and affection to their life partners by helping them in household chores. A woman is worthy of her husband’s kindness and kind gestures.
As per the saying of Holy Prophet (PBUH): “the best of you are those who are best to your women.” – Jami` at-Tirmidhi 11622-Express Love: A woman has a right to be loved by her husband. Husband needs to express his love. He needs to make sure that his wife knows how important she is to him.
A Husband shall try to devote himself towards his wife and to love her unconditionally.
3-Wife’s right to take Khula: A woman has all the right to decide for separating with her husband. Husband shall understand that it is not only he who can decide about the divorce his wife has the equal right of divorce.
4-Right of remarrying: A woman has all the rights to get married again. She can get married after taking a divorce from her current husband or in case his husband has died. Islam has given a divorced woman and a widow to get married again.
5-Right to be Praised: A husband shall praise the good qualities of his wife. He shall make sure to pass a compliment towards his wife. Husbands can praise her hard work and good qualities in front of others to make her feel important and above all happy!
Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A believer must not hate a believing woman (i.e., his wife); if he dislikes one of her traits he will be pleased with another.” (Muslim)
6-Provision of livelihood: It is the duty of a husband to provide his wife and children adequate food, clothing and shelter facilities. This means the male counterpart is to earn a livelihood for his family.
7-Right to retain the Earnings: A husband has no right over his wife’s earning. He cannot ask how much she earned and where she spends it.
Unless she tells him willingly, the husband has no right to ask about her personal earnings. A wife can spend out her own earnings without her husband’s permission.
8-Right to keep her last name after marriage: A wife has all the right to keep her last name. This means that she is not duty bound to change her last name after marriage.
9-Right to meet her loved ones: A husband cannot and should not stop his wife from meeting her parents, siblings and other relatives.
10-Right in Inheritance: In case of death of her husband, she is entitled to her part in the inheritance of husband.
