Top 10 largest religions in the World and their beliefs

There are roughly 4,200 religions in the world. Religion is something that determines our faith. Interestingly there are many religions existing in the world. Each religion has its own beliefs. People belonging to different religion hold different beliefs. We came up with the world’s ten largest religions. These religions are expanding at a smooth pace and have gained a significant number of followers now:

10-Shintoism: Shintoism is a religion followed by about 4 million people (which makes .01% of the total population). The people belonging to this religion are known as Shinto. Nihon Shoki and The Kojiki are its two sacred scriptures. It is an old religion whose foundation dates back to 300 BC.

9-Jainism: Mahavira, referred as the Great Hero, was the one who founded the religion in 600 BC. Its followers, known as the Janis, are 4.5 million in number. (or 0.06 of the total population). Jain Agamas is the name given to the scriptures. These scriptures are more than 40 in number). Interestingly the Jainism religion has two sects namely The Shvetambaras and the Digambaras.

8-Confucianism: The religion Confucianism is now being followed by about 7 million people, which makes about 0.1% of the population. Most of the followers are concentrated in the South East Asian region. The religion has 9 books in total: 4 of them are the major books and others being holy Books. The religion was founded in 600 BC by Kong Qiu (K’ung Ch’iu). Confucius and Confucians are the names given to the followers of this religion.

7-Bahaism: With about 8 Million followers (which make 0.15% of the total population), Bahaism is the seventh most followed religion of the world. The religion has its roots in Iran and was founded in 1900 AD by Mirza Husayn Ali (Bahaullah). Bahaullah would preach the religion there but he was forced to flee. He died in Palestine. Kitab al Aqdas is the holy book of the Bahai. Bahai or Babis is the name given to the followers of Bahaism.

6-Judaism: Judaism is one of the oldest religions which was founded in 1300 BC by Hazrat Ibrahim A.S, Hazrat Yaqoob A.S., and Hazrat Ishaq A.S in 1300 BC. Jews, the followers of Judaism, account for .3% of the total population. The Jews have formulated themselves in three categories: Conservative, Orthodox, and Liberals. Most of the Jews are concentrated in the country of Israel.

5-Sikhism: Guru Nanak founded the religion in India during 1469-1539 AD. With 30 million followers, the religion is the 5th largest religion in the world. “Guru Granth Sahib” is the holy book of Sikhs. Sikh men often wear a turban on their heads.

4-Buddhism: The followers of Buddhism, the Buddhist have a population of 400 million. The religion was founded by Siddhartha Gautama in 600 BC. The religion has three sects named Mahayana, Vajrayana, and Hinayana. The basic teaching is centered on the phenomenon of life after death.

3-Hinduism: With one billion followers, Hinduism is the world’s third largest religion. The 90% of Hindus are concentrated in India. The world’s oldest religion has no founder, however, the religion was founded in 1500 BC.

2-Islam: 23% of the world’s population comprises of Muslims (the followers of Islam). The religion which is currently the second largest religion was founded by Prophet Muhammad in 610 AD. Holy Quran is their Holy book. The followers of this religion are divided into two sects; the Sunni and the Shia. Sunnis are dominant as they comprise 90% of the Muslim population.

1-Christianity: With 2.3 billion followers, Christianity is the world’s largest religion. The religion was founded in 27 AD BY Jesus Christ. Christianity is the religion which preaches that there is a life after death. The Christians (the followers of Christianity) believe that Jesus is the son of God and they shall meet him once they die.
