Who doesn’t like the refreshing and delicious fruit that is a watermelon? It is a perfect snack for hot days and a great substitute for fatty desserts.It is one of my favorite fruits especially in the hot summer. When you eat watermelon during the hot days of summer, it provides you a sense of calmness. Here are some benefits of watermelon;
1-Watermelon has much more lycopene than raw tomatoes: Lycopene is a potent carotenoid antioxidant which given the vegetables and fruits a red or pink color. It is most commonly associated with tomatoes; however, watermelon has a more concentrated source of lycopene. In comparison to a large fresh tomato, one cup watermelon has 1.5 times more lycopene than the watermelon.
2-Watermelon Juice can relieve soreness of muscles: If you have a juicer you can use, try juicing out about one-third of a fresh watermelon and then drink the juice prior to your workout. This juice contains more than 1 gram of I-citrulline, which is an amino acid which protects muscles against pain.
A study had found that those men who drank unadulterated or treated watermelon juice before their workout had much less soreness 24 hours after the workout in comparison to those who had a placebo. You must be careful though as the juice contains a lot of fructose.
3-It is both a fruit and vegetable and completely edible: Watermelon is related to squash, pumpkin as well as cucumbers. This is due to the fact that it is part fruit and part vegetable. Watermelon is also completely edible, although not many people know this and generally dispose of the green rind.
4-Benefits of seeds and rind: Try putting in the green rind and seeds in a blender with a bit of lime for a healthy and refreshing delicacy. The rind contains plenty of blood building chlorophyll however it is generally unknown that the rind, in reality, has more citrulline amino acid than the pink meat of watermelon.
Citrulline is converted into arginine in the kidney and the amino acid is vital for health as well as maintaining the immune system. Some researchers show that it has medicinal value for 100 various conditions.
While some people generally prefer the seedless variety of watermelons, the black seeds in the watermelon are 100 percent edible and are actually very healthy to eat in itself. The seeds contain fiber, iron, zinc as well as protein. The seedless seeds are not genetically modified in any way; the seedless variety has come through hybridization.
5-Watermelons are mostly water: Watermelon is calculated to be around 91 percent water. This way people can keep themselves hydrated on a hot day and it is a tasty way of avoiding dehydration, however, it is not a substitute for drinking a lot of clean fresh water.
6-Different benefits of different watermelons: There are also some varieties which have a honey flavored meat, much sweeter than pink watermelon flesh, and the outer color of the honey flavored melon is yellowish golden color. It has been concluded that the yellowish melon has a separate set of health and nutritional benefits than the pink fleshed ones; however, most of the research till today has been based on the pink fleshed variety only.
