Perform Umrah once during Ramadan, Give chance to others – Grand Mufti

Umrah is pilgrimage performed by Muslims in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, which is not mandatory and can be performed at any time of the year. This means it is not fard (mandatory) for a Muslim to perform it in his life but Hajj is mandatory. Muslims all around the world would love and really wish to enter the Holy city of Makkah and visit the Kaaba and perform Umrah. It is seen that people having the financial resources for visiting Makkah, visit it very often during the month of Ramadan. There is a hadith in this regard, ‘Perform ‘Umrah when Ramadan comes, for ‘Umrah in Ramadan is equal to Hajj (in reward), Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 27, Number 10. Because of this, most of the individuals who are trying to visit the place for the first time do not actually get the chance.[irp]

Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Sheikh, grand mufti in Jeddah who is a religious scholar for almost 15 years in Saudi Arabia and also is the head of council of senior scholars, said that those Muslims who have already performed Umrah during the month of Ramadan, should refrain from applying and visiting again and again so that other individuals get a chance. It was also reported that he declared that those Muslims who still visit Makkah and do not consider the needs of other Muslims and their right to visit should not be allowed to perform rituals at the Grand Mosque. If a Muslim has already performed Umrah during the month of Ramadan either once, he/she should then do Tawaf and other ibadah in the Grand Mosque.

The point is that the individuals who already performed Umrah before will over crowd the place and create difficulty for those who did not get the chance previously. So one should take care of their fellow Muslim brothers and sisters and give them a chance to perform Umrah without any hassle too. King Salman, the custodian of the two holy mosques, urged the officials to increase easy access to pilgrims of the expanded holy mosque.

No doubt what Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz said was not at all wrong. Umrah is an opportunity not everyone gets easily. Performing it again and again by a single individual only is not fair whereas there are so many others waiting for their turn, in line, to take advantage of this golden opportunity and when they do, they face over crowdedness.[irp]

They cannot perform it in peace as the others did, who did it multiple times because of them not giving chance to others. Muslims should have courtesy and a sense of sympathy for their fellow Muslims and should refrain from performing it multiple times in order to give others the chance they already got once or twice.
