Islam is a complete code of conduct and facilitates its followers regarding everyday life which help them to steer their life in the right direction. Allah has several times mentioned in Holly Quran that he made human beings to worship him, to spread goodness among their fellows and to build up a peaceful united community. Islamic system emphasizes over increasing physical and financial strength by fair means to embrace power and valor. Islamic system directs human beings for the health of their mind, body, and soul. The Holy Prophet Mohammed S.A.W explained the superiority of a strong believer over weaker one in such a way. “The strong (active) believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while it is good in both.”
Allah has made a compulsion for Muslims to offer prayers five times a day. Other prayers and Islamic rituals are also exercise based. A believer needs not to join a gym anymore if he offers prayers five times a day and walks towards Masjid to do it. It provides plenty of physical and spiritual exercise in five sessions and keeps a person perfectly fit and healthy lifetime. The increasing trend of reliance on modern technology and leisure based activities; obesity has become the major problem of the world. Some of the recommended activities to keep a person fit and healthy are;
Swimming: Swimming is one of four acts notified by Hadith for followers to keep themselves active and fit. Holy Prophet PBUH mentioned swimming among rest of the three acts which lead to the blessing of Allah for the believer and enhance strength as well. It is reported that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “any action without the remembrance of God is either a diversion or heedlessness excepting four acts: Walking from target to target [during archery practice], training a horse, playing with one’s family, and learning to swim”. – Tabrani. It clearly states that Islam has a major concern with physical activities and strength of believers. Not only Muslims but non-Muslims can also get benefited by practicing these golden rules.
Archery: Besides swimming, Archery is one of the four physical activities which are recommended by Hadith. It provides plenty of exercise for mind and body. Archery is an ancient practice used by warriors to improve their war skills. It requires both physical and mental attention hence help in the nourishment of both.
Horse racing: It has been reported that Holy Prophet PBUH himself participated in horse racing practices and training sessions from Al-Hafya to Thaniyyat Al- Wada. Quran has mentioned clearly for believers to get equipped and to increase their strength by getting trained in horse racing and riding.
Running: Today several marathons and racing competitions are considered good for health. 1400 years ago, Holy Prophet PBUH practiced it by racing with his beloved wife Aisha R.A which she won for the first time and later after a couple of years, he PBUH outran her in another race.
